Member of Parliament for Chitradurga Janardhana Swamy on Wednesday stressed the effectiveness of traditional medicine and urged people to use them. He was speaking after laying the foundation stone here for an Ayurvedic, Yoga, Unani, Siddha, Naturopathy and Homoeopathy (AYUSH) hospital in Hiriyur taluk.

Mr. Swamy said that traditional systems of medicine such as ayurveda, Unani and homeopathy had been practised for thousands of years in the country.

He stressed the need for proper diagnosis and added that many people succumbed to their ailments as the diagnosis was not right.

“According to the available data, even in a developed country like the United States of America, close to one lakh people die every year due to improper diagnosis and wrongly prescribed medicines. In a country like India, the death rate will be even higher,” he said.

He said of late, interest in using traditional medicines was growing. “The Government has been increasing its expenditure on traditional systems of medicine to encourage their growth,” Mr. Swamy said.

He said that the Government was spending Rs. 37.5 lakh each to construct AYUSH hospitals in Challakere and Hiriyur taluks.

He appealed to people to keep their surroundings clean to avoid the spread of diseases.

Chitradurga Zilla Panchayat president C. Mahalingappa said that traditional medicines were affordable and cost-effective compared to allopathic medicines.

President of the zilla panchayat's standing committee for Health and Education H. Chandrappa and District Health and Family Welfare Officer, N. Venkatashivareddy and were present on the occassion.
