The Zilla Abhivruddhi Vedike will start a movement against dowry and the extravagant spending in marriages. The decision was taken at a meeting here on Friday. Vedike member Abdul Quadeer said that the huge cost of marriages was landing families in a debt trap. No religion sanctioned practices like dowry, he said.

Another member, Shrikant Swamy, suggested that the government encourage simple, registered marriages.

Channabasappa Halahalli said that the vedike would urge owners of community halls and kalyana mantapas to reduce rent for simple marriages. The vedike would also convene a meeting of religious heads, he added. — Special Correspondent
