DHARWAD: The proposed move of the Union Government to close the RMS (Railway Mail Service) at Dharwad and merge it with the facility at Hubli has been opposed.

Krishna Joshi, president of Puraskar and Jana Jagruti Samiti, has written to the Union Minister of Communication and Information Technology Dayanidhi Maran urging him to withdraw the move immediately.

The sorting office at Dharwad, which has been functional since three decades, was instrumental in getting the letters delivered in time, he has said.

Letters reaching Dharwad from different places were sorted out in the office and were delivered the same day. But the move to shift the sorting office to Hubli would result in unnecessary delay. If the proposed move came into effect, then the letters would have to be routed through the Hubli facility, he has said.

If the facility is shifted to Hubli, then even the letters dropped in post boxes of Dharwad addressed to residents of Dharwad, will have to be routed through the Hubli facility.
