In what was a happy reunion, an eight-month-old baby girl finally landed into the warmth of her mother’s lap thanks to the efforts of the Women and Child Development Departments in Belgaum and Uttara Kannada districts.

The baby was found alone in a general compartment in a train at Raibag Railway Station and shifted to the district government hospital on Monday. Efforts to find the mother went in vain until Deputy Director of Women and Child Development K.H. Obalappa received a call from one of his officials in Karwar on Thursday morning.

He said that the mother, Anita, had exited the Miraj-bound train at Castle Rock Station, and was unable to get back inside. Not able to bear the shock of losing the baby, she fell unconscious and was shifted to the government hospital in Ramnagar. Soon staff all over the district were alerted. An official rang up the department’s Belgaum branch to see if a missing child was found there; she was.

A team from Belgaum fetched Anita from Ramnagar on Thursday afternoon. She was taken to the hospital where the baby was handed over to her. However, perhaps due to the shock of losing her baby, Anita became incoherent; she could only identify the baby and reveal her name and the baby’s. The doctors will house her in the hospital’s women’s ward until Anita recovers.
