As the April sun beats down heating up the afternoon air in Mangalore, a knot of college boys stop by a public tap in Kodialguthu to slake their thirst with cooled water. While their thirst is quenched, one wonders whether they know the story behind the tap’s existence.
R. K. Shenoy, who installed the tap, which offers cold water to passersby, said that it all started on his mother’s birthday. The woman, Radha M. Shenoy, was to turn 84 in October last year. So her children thought of celebrating it in a big way.
However, Ms. Shenoy suffered a fall and instead of having a celebration, her children thought of a different way to mark her birthday.
They decided to get a tap fixed on the compound wall so that anybody could quench their thirst. Their mother inaugurated it. Since the family lives on the first floor, Mr. Shenoy said, “We got her till the ground floor seated in a chair. She inaugurated the tap and said it would have delighted our father.”
Mr. Shenoy said that the tap offered water twenty-four hours. Even at midnight, people stopped for a drink. The tap is connected to a water purifier, he said.
The family members were thrilled every time they saw someone drinking water from the tap. The octogenarian was currently in hospital and recovering, said Mr. Shenoy.
Mr. Shenoy is now thinking of making available hot and lukewarm water for the elderly and hoping the provision will be made before monsoon. He wished more people would follow suit.
