HASSAN: The Union Government has permitted the Department of Forests to capture two elephants in the first phase of elephant shifting, but imposed certain conditions.

Speaking to The Hindu, Deputy Conservator for Forests Ambadi Madhava said here on Wednesday that the Government put forth certain conditions such as the constitution of an expert committee. The panel will be headed by Ajay Desai from the Ministry of Environment and Forests, and will comprise a representative from the PCCF Wildlife, the Wildlife Institute of India and two members from a local NGO.

The panel would identify troublesome elephants, tranquilize them, affix a radio collar and shift them to Nagarahole or Bandipur forests; their movements would be tracked, he said. If the operation was successful, permission would be granted to capture other elephants in Alur, Sakleshpur and Arkalgud taluks, he said.
