: H.S. Prakash, MLA, has demanded that the State government bring villages around Hassan under the jurisdiction of the City Municipal Council so that drinking water supply and other basic infrastructure facilities could be improved there.

Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday, the MLA said villages around the city had been facing acute shortage of drinking water. As the residents depended only on borewells, which had dried up over the years, the problem had become severe. The CMC had been demanding that the government widen the council’s area by including villages that fall within a 5-km radius of the city.

The CMC, he said, submitted a proposal in September 2010 to the government in this regard and also prepared a list of villages. The list included 48 villages in Kasaba hobli and three in Shantigrama hobli.

If the area under CMC was increased, funds from the Centre and State government would also increase substantially and development works could be taken up, Mr. Prakash added.
