Six more panels recommended to help task force

TUMKUR: “Abhivriddhi”, a forum for the development of Tumkur City, on Tuesday, presented petitions to Suresh Kumar S., Minister for Law and Tumkur district in-charge, and P. Venkataramanappa, Minister for Small-scale Industries and Sericulture, urging them to finalise the Tumkur City Comprehensive Development Plan soon.

Forum president Kundaranahalli Ramesh said the Tumkur City Municipal Council was due to be upgraded to the status of City Corporation following the accession of 124 surrounding villages. The Government should lose no time in notifying the formation of the corporation.

Mr. Ramesh said the Tumkur Urban Development Authority had been developing a Comprehensive Development Plan (CDP) for the 310 sq.km area of Tumkur City, taking into account the newly accessed villages.

“The CDP must be finalised very early, lest the city grow haphazard and corrections to it will cost more,” he said. On March 24, 2000, Tumkur Development Task Force was formed to help finalise the CDP. The objective was to create civic amenities required for a population of 13.39 lakhs (projected figure for 2028).

On April 2, 2008, the Government formed nine expert panels to assist the functioning of the task force. He pleaded that six more panels should be formed.
