Minister to open Forestry College jubilee function

A function to mark the silver jubilee of the Forestry College here will be held on its premises here on Sunday. Minister for Forests Yogeshwar will inaugurate the function at 11 a.m.

District in-charge Minister Vishweshwar Hegde Kageri will preside over it. Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Suresh Kumar, the former Minister Vijayshankar, Western Ghats Task Force Chairman Anant Ashisar, and Sunil Hegde, MLA, will be the chief guests.

The college, affiliated to the University of Agricultural Sciences (UAS), Dharwad, came into being in 1985 in Dharwad. Later, it was shifted to Magod in Yellapur taluk, and in 1990, it got its own campus on Sirsi-Banavasi road here.

Postgraduate courses were introduced in the college in 1997. Many of the college’s students are holding important positions across the country. One of them, Shabha Alam Ansari of Jharkhand, secured first place in IFS. Parimala H., who studied in the college, is the first woman forest officer in the State.

Of the 328 students learning here now, 81 are girls.

There are 31 IFS officers, seven assistant conservators of forests and 60 range forest officers in service, who have graduated from this college.

On Saturday, Vice-Chancellor of UAS R.R. Hanchinal will inaugurate the Alumni Association here.
