ZPs have to consult MLAs on schemes
Karwar: Minister for Small Scale Industries Shivanand Naik on Monday defended the decision of the Government to make it mandatory for zilla panchayats to implement rural development work in every Assembly constituency in consultation with the MLAs concerned.
The Minister was reacting to a statement of Uttara Kannada Zilla Panchayat president Damodar Gardikar, who is the president of the Federation of Zilla Panchayat Presidents that implementation of development works was the responsibility of the zilla panchayat only and there should not be any interference by MLAs.
Mr. Naik said it were the MLA and MP who were answerable to the people.
He said MLAs were familiar with the problems of their constituencies. As such the zilla panchayat should bring to the notice of the MLA concerned the development works proposed.
He said it was true that the border taluks were neglected in the past. Karwar and Joida taluks were not an exception to this. More attention had to be paid for all-round development of border taluks. He could not exercise his authority on other departments in the district unless he was made in-charge of the district, he said.
