HASSAN: The Hassan Milk Union, which covers Hassan, Chikmagalur and Kodagu districts, will increase the milk procurement rate by 50 paise a kg. The rate will go up from Rs. 14.06 to Rs. 14.56, October onwards.

Addressing presspersons here on Wednesday, president of the Hassan Milk Union H.D. Revanna also announced a support price of Rs. 2 a litre to be given through the milk union.

He said that the Hassan Sahakari Haalu Utpadakara Sanghagala Okkuta Niyamitha had earned a profit of Rs. 1.14 crore this year as compared to Rs. 1.17 crore last year. The total turnover had risen to Rs. 250 crore, he said. He also said that the Hassan Milk Union had been placed first among the 13 milk unions in the State this year. Mr. Revanna said that a chilling plant of 1 lakh litre capacity would be is established in Shettyhalli near Chennarayapatna at a cost of Rs. 6.25 crore. From this unit, 1 lakh litres of milk would be packaged and sent to the defence forces as well as to other States. Mr. Revanna said that milk procurement had increased and the capacity of the Hassan dairy processing unit would be increased from the present 1.2 lakh litres to 2.5 lakh litres at a cost of Rs. 10.89 crore with assistance from the National Dairy Development Board.
