Panic prevailed when a leopard attacked two men at Lalagatti village, near here, on Thursday. District Forest Officer P. Shankar said the leopard entered the village from the nearby forest.

Sahadevappa Kale and Devendrappa Kale, who were working in their fields when they were attacked, did not sustain serious injuries and were treated at the village itself.

Mr. Shankar said the leopard got frightened when people began gathering and shouting, and entered a maize field nearby. People expressed fears that the leopard might enter their dwellings in the night.

Staff to camp out

He said Forest Department personnel would camp there through the night, and attempt to drive the leopard back into the forest.

The department would try to trap the leopard and transfer it to the forest if did not leave the village by morning, Mr. Shankar added.
