Bidar: The State Government will set up a memorial for 12th century saint Hadpad Appanna in Basava Kalyan.
Agriculture Minister and district in charge Bandeppa Kashempur said that the Basava Kalyan Development Board would be asked to take up the work on the memorial immediately.
The cave where Appanna was said to have meditated would be preserved, he said. Mr. Kashempur expressed regret over the board leaving out Appanna memorial from the list of monuments to be preserved.
He was speaking at the district Hadpad community conference at Basava Kalyan on Tuesday.
“We will also release Rs. 2 crore to enable the Hadpad Appanna Chair in Gulbarga University take up research and publication,” he said.
Basavalinga Pattaddevaru of Bhalki Hire Math said Appanna was one of the closest associates of Basaveshwara. Basavapriya Appanna Swamiji of Tandagi spoke.
Zilla Hadpad Appanna Sangha president Prabhurao Tarnalli asked the Government to include Hadpad community among Scheduled Castes. His other demands include protecting and preserving the memorial of Appanna’s wife Lingamma, scholarships to children of barbers to take up higher studies, financial help to set up barber shops and appointing members of the community to various boards and corporations.
