Basavaraj Naika, Mayakonda MLA and chairman of the Thanda Abhivruddi Nigam, was gheraoed at Mayakonda village on Wednesday for his alleged failure to secure taluk status for Mayakonda.

Seemingly baffled by this sudden turn of events, Mr. Naika invited people to the village temple to discuss ways and means to pressure the government. However, the agitators criticised Mr. Naika for not supporting the cause in the past, and refused.

They said Mr. Naika had not taken part in the agitations held in Mayakonda and Davangere demanding taluk status. He accused the agitators of being affiliated to major political parties.

Later, Mr. Naika said he had met Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar twice and appealed for taluk status. However, due to the election code of conduct, the government is unable to announce any new taluks in the State, he said.
