The Adjustment Bureau (English)
Cast: Matt Damon, Emily Blunt
Director: George Nolfi
The poster showed Matt Damon on the run again! This man has been chased since forever — or at least from the Bourne movies. However, while there are mysterious strangers in hats chasing after our intrepid hero, The Adjustment Bureau plays out like a sweet, smart, fast-paced love story.
Based on the Philip K. Dick short story, Adjustment Team, the movie tells the story of David Norris, a politician with promise, falling in love with pretty ballerina Elise. There seems to be a shadowy group of people bent on keeping the couple apart.
The film talks about free choice and how each of us needs to follow the Plan — which looks like a mad but tidy architect's plan. Failure to do so, chance, coincidence and all the rest of it throws the Plan into disarray and all sorts of horrid things happen which needs to be set right by the Chairman. Sounds like a bureaucrat's dream come true.
While there is enough psychobabble to keep the conspiracy theorists and part-time paranoid androids infinitely amused, Damon as Norris and Emily Blunt as Elise (with cute British accent) invest in their characters to make us care about them.
Philip K. Dick stories have been translated by auteurs to gripping movies, including Ridley Scott's Blade Runner (1982), Paul Verhoeven's Total Recall (1990) and Steven Spielberg's Minority Report (2002).
Writer-director George Nolfi joins this illustrious company with this genre-bending metaphysical science fiction romance.
