‘Mansur Samman’ for Padmavati Saligrama

Trust chalks out year-long programmes

DHARWAD: The birth centenary celebrations of Hindustani vocalist Mallikarjun Mansur will begin here on Thursday with the presentation of “Mansur Rashtriya Samman” to vocalist Padmavati Saligrama of Mumbai.

Deputy Commissioner Darpan Jain, who is also the chairman of Dr. Mallikarjun Mansur National Memorial Trust, told presspersons here on Tuesday that apart from “Mansur Samman”, “Mallikarjun Mansur Yuva Puraskar” would be presented to musicians Shakti Patil of Dharwad and Shraddha Jain of Bhopal.

He said while the national award comprised a cash prize of Rs. 1 lakh and a citation, the “yuva puraskar” included Rs. 25,000 and a citation.

The Deputy Commissioner said that the trust had chalked-out year-long programmes.

Cultural programmes, seminars and workshops would be organised in the district as part of the centenary celebrations.

He said that a proposal for the development of Dr. Mallikarjun Mansur Kalabhavan in Dharwad had been submitted to the State Government.

He said the State Government had released Rs. 1 crore for the development of Mansur village in Dharwad taluk, the birthplace of Mallikarjun Mansur. The project would be launched in two weeks.

District in-charge Minister Murugesh Nirani will inaugurate the birth centenary celebrations at 6 p.m. Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Minister Jagadish Shettar will present the awards. Chairman of the legislative Council Viranna Mattikatti will be the chief guest. The Chairman of the Karnataka Border Area Development Authority will preside over the function.
