Manna Dey, the legendary playback singer whose condition was said to be critical till a few days ago, is recovering now.
Sources in Narayana Hrudayalaya, where he has been undergoing treatment for the past month, said he was taken off the ventilator on Friday. He was even seen relaxing on a chair and listening to music on Saturday.
Mr. Dey has been undergoing treatment for age-related complications, mainly neuro-respiratory problems. He also has kidney-related problems for which he is on dialysis. “As he has undergone a tracheostomy, he is only on liquid diet. . He is conscious and has been interacting with his daughter,” said a spokesperson of the hospital. “A patient’s condition is said to be critical when he/she is on a ventilator (life-support system). This is because he is unable to breathe on his own. Doctors had been trying to take Mr. Dey off the ventilator for the past three days and they were successful on Friday after Mr. Dey started breathing on his own. This is really good news for all of us,” the spokesperson said.
The 94-year-old legend, who has sung more than 3,500 songs in different languages, including Hindi and Bengali in a career spanning seven decades, has settled down in Bangalore after being in Mumbai for five decades.
