P. Manivannan, chief project officer with the Karnataka State Highway Improvement Project (KSHIP), is now a Lieutenant with the 106 Infantry Battalion (Territorial Army), Parachute Regiment, Bangalore.

The pipping ceremony (when the officer gets his rank on his shoulder) was done by Major General A.K. Singh, General Officer Commanding, Karnataka and Kerala Sub Area, and Salma Fahim, wife of Lieutenant Manivannan and IAS official.

Lieutenant Manivannan is a 1998 batch IAS officer.

He told The Hindu that he had for long cherished a dream to join the Armed forces. “I wanted to join the National Defence Academy when I was young. But my parents wanted me to get at least a degree first. Eventually, I joined civil services,” he said.
