MANGALORE: The T.M.A Pai International Convention Centre was filled to capacity with glowing faces on Friday for the convocation of the Manipal University. The students had turned out in classic black robes with wizard hats.
As the presentation of certificates to students began, the number of camera-totting parents also increased. The students were the celebrities of the evening.
Delivering the convocation address, MP and director of National Institute of Advanced Studies K. Kasturirangan said the efforts of the institute in cultivating young minds were laudable. “Manipal University holds a special place in the history of higher education in India. It was here that the first private medical college was started,” he said and added that the institute was the first in the country to be certified under ISO 9001:2000.
He advised the students to keep updating their knowledge with the developments in their field. “Students should steer clear of the trappings of their profession. Your generation is subject to the pulls of a world in which salaries and perks are preferred to socio-economic issues,” he said.
