He was arrested on charges of ‘currency doubling’
The Mandya police have decided to cancel the weapon licence of City Municipal Council member M.P. Arun Kumar who was arrested on Monday night.
Bhushan Gulabrao Borase, Superintendent of Police (Mandya), said the department planned to cancel the licence, valid up to December this year, shortly. Mr. Arunkumar had obtained the weapon licence from the Mandya West police station.
The Srirangapatna police have seized a .22 calibre revolver, Rs. 25 lakh in cash, and a few rounds of bullets from the councillor, Mr. Borase told The Hindu .
According to preliminary investigations, the councillor was found to be involved in criminal activities.
The police had arrested Mr. Arunkumar and four others for allegedly operating a “currency doubling” racket.
Besides cash and a firearm, the police had also seized two cars, a note-counting machine, a fake note detector and seven mobile phones from the accused.
Police officials believe that the gang members were running the racket in several districts, including Mandya and Mysore. They were allegedly cheating people by giving them counterfeit notes.
Meanwhile, M.S. Geetha Prasanna, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Srirangapatna subdivision, has formed a special team to trace the alleged kingpin, Imtiyaz of Mysore. “We are investigating the case,” she told The Hindu .
The police are also investigating to ascertain the nexus between the arrested persons and the racketeers.
