Raichur: The Raichur police on Thursday arrested Gadwal Khaleel, 44, on the charge of selling chloral hydrate to manufacture spurious toddy in Raichur and Deodurga taluks.

The accused has been remanded in judicial custody. The police said that four days ago, they arrested Ananthamma when she was selling spurious toddy here and seized 12 kg of chloral hydrate from her. She revealed that Gadwal Khaleel was selling chloral hydrate through his agents Mareppa and Narasimhalu and Sugaiah Swamy. During interrogation, Khaleel confessed that 16 months ago, he sold 2,400 kg of chloral hydrate in Raichur and Deodurga taluks through his agents, the police said.

Dies in accident

A man died on the spot and 38 people were injured when a lorry in which they were travelling overturned and fell into a ditch near Lingsugur on Thursday. The police gave the name of the dead as Durgappa, 24. The injured have been admitted to the Government Hospital in Lingsugur. In another road accident, Bujamma, 55, was injured when a tractor hit her at Laxmi Camp in Sindhanur taluk on Thursday. She died on the way to hospital.

Farmer dies

Hanumantha, 28, who developed a breathing problem after inhaling pesticide which he was spraying in a field near Golpalli village in Lingsugur taluk on Thursday, died at the Government Hospital in Lingsugur.
