A man has filed a complaint against his estranged wife alleging that she had beaten their seven-year-old son severely over a petty issue.

Based on the complaint by Sridhar, the Sakleshpur police registered an assault case against Lakshmi, a native of Kudugarahalli near Sakleshpur town, on Wednesday.

The boy, who has bruises on his face and hands, is being treated in the Hassan Institute of Medical Sciences hospital here. Lakshmi allegedly beat him up with a stick on Tuesday night for taking Rs. 5 from her purse to buy a chocolate.

The couple, who married nine years ago, have two children. According to the police, the couple have been living separately since the last nine months and the children — the boy and a four-year-old girl — are living with Lakshmi.

Sridhar told journalists on Thursday that he wanted to take care of his son here after. He demanded his wife be punished for the crime.

The police, who registered the case under section 324 of the Indian Penal Code, questioned Lakshmi about the incident.
