Uttara Kannada district has about eight lakh hectares of forest area and their protection must be the first priority of the Forest Department, said R. Gokul, Deputy Conservator of Forests, Karwar.
He was addressing officials of the Forest Department here on Wednesday on the occasion of Martyrs Day. After laying wreaths over statues of martyrs of the Forest Department who laid down their life when on duty, Mr. Gokul said that the forest officials of Uttara Kannada had proved that they were efficient by detecting illegal ore export.
He said the Government had entrusted the responsibility of protecting the forests to the department. The officials should discharge their duty without fear, he added.
