BBMP accused of causing problem

Bangalore: A large number of telephone lines, including that of the police control room, remained affected the whole of Sunday thanks to the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) that damaged the telephone cables and data circuits while digging the Raj Bhavan Road near Basaveshwara circle for laying pre-cast elements to construct a pedestrian subway.

More than 3,000 telephone connections and over 200 data circuits connected from Central exchange of the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) were damaged as the BBMP personnel dug up the road allegedly without informing the BSNL officials about the construction work.

The police control room, police central exchange, legislators’ home, Akashavani, parts of Shivajinagar, multi-storeyed building, BESCOM office near K.R. Circle and many private firms situated in the surrounding areas were among the offices which were affected the most owing to disconnection of telephone and data line connections. Though service to police control room and exchange was restored on Monday, it would take nearly a week to completely restore all the damaged lines, BSNL officials said. “How can the BBMP afford to take up such a major work without informing us and giving sufficient time to shift the lines? The BBMP engineers gave us the drawing of the subway on Sunday, after digging up the road and damaging the lines,” said a senior BSNL official. “It was even more shocking for us when they told us that they will undertake construct work on pedestrian subways every weekend at Basaveshwara circle.

Haste makes waste

Major duct containing data and telephone lines through Central exchange from this area and long distance connectivity would be affected if any construction work is taken up in haste,” the officials pointed out. The BSNL officials felt that the BBMP officials should inform and coordinate with them before taking up major construction work as damage to telephone and data lines will affect the people at large. However, when contacted, the BBMP officials claimed that they had intimated the higher authorities in BSNL.
