Mahima Patel, son of the former Chief Minister late J.H. Patel, rejoined the JD(S) on Friday. The Congress had denied him ticket to contest from the Davangere Lok Sabha constituency. The former Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy went to Mr. Patel’s residence to welcome him. He said he was happy to have Mr. Patel back in the party as he belonged to the Janata parivar. He would contest from Davangere, Mr. Kumaraswamy announced. Mr. Patel had won the Assembly election from Channagiri as a JD(S) candidate in 2004. He later formed his own party — Swarna Yuga Party — before joining the Congress in 2009. With the JD(S) deciding to field Mr. Kumaraswamy from Chickballapur, a battle is on the cards in the constituency where Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas M. Veerappa Moily (Congress) and former Minister B.N. Bache Gowda of the BJP are also in the fray. “I will not disappoint the people of Chickballapur, and will commence campaigning in right earnest,” he said on Thursday.
