Belgaum: A large number of mahila Congress workers formed a human chain at Rani Channamma Circle here on Tuesday in protest against the “volte-face” by the BJP Government on its promises and those made by the previous JD(S)-BJP coalition Government for the development of Belgaum.
Traffic in the area was disrupted for some time.
Led by general secretary of the Karnataka Pradesh Mahila Congress Committee Laxmi R. Hebbalkar, they raised slogans against the Government and Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa for his “volte-face” on according the “second capital” tag to Belgaum, a commitment made by the previous Government where Mr. Yeddyurappa was Deputy Chief Minister.
The former Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy had promised to make Belgaum the “second capital” of the State on the occasion of the special legislature session held here in September 2006.
He had also announced to establish a Suvarna Vidhana Soudha in Belgaum. Mr. Yeddyurappa not only acknowledged these promises, but had also reiterated his resolve to fulfil them on several occasions, they said.
They said that though the Government organised a mega function to lay the foundation stone for the proposed Suvarna Vidhana Soudha on the Vaccine Institute premises in August last, work on it was yet to commence.
More over, Mr. Yeddyurappa had asked the district administration to find another site for the proposed Suvarna Vidhana Soudha.
This would further delay the work on the project, they said.
The mahila Congress members took out a procession to the Deputy Commissioner’s office where they submitted a memorandum addressed to the Governor urging him to seek an explanation from the Chief Minister on the promises made to the people of the State.
