As the scheduled dates for Lusofonia Games, Goa 2014 close in, the Sports Authority of Goa (SAG) ground in Campal, on the outskirts of the city is gearing to witness the launch of the official mascot of the Games along the river Mandovi on December 10.

Indian sporting champions Milkha Singh and Sania Mirza are likely to be present at the occasion. The third Lusofonia Games will be held over the period of 12 days from January 18 to 29 and will see participation from over 1500 athletes and officials from 12 nations.

Along with the mascot, the official Games song will also be launched at the event, which will take place in the presence of sportspersons, the designated Chef-de-Missions of the participating countries, Associação dos Comités Olímpicos de Língua Oficial Portuguesa (ACOLOP) members and other dignitaries.

The multilingual Games song has been scripted by poet, writer and St. Andrade MLA Vishnu Wagh, in Konkani, Portuguese, Marathi, Hindi and English. Goan nightingale Lorna along with Sonia Shirsat will lend their melodious voice to the song. The song has been composed by Goan musician Mukesh Ghatwal.

Theme

India’s ethos of multiplicity will be celebrated at the Lusofonia Games launch event through the theme which celebrates Panchattatva – the five elements of nature – Fire, Water, Earth, Air and Ether (Agni-Jal-Vayu-Prithvi-Aakash). Conceptualised by a team of creative intellectuals including Tomazinho Cardozo, Ajay Vaidya, ShridharBambolkar, Rose Ferns, Rajeev Shinde and Satish Gawas, led by celebrated theatre consultant Bansi Kaul, the glittering evening will see a performance of various art forms, symbolic of the five elements.

Goa will host the Portuguese commonwealth games in nine disciplines. The participating countries are Brazil, Angola, Cape Verde, East Timor, Equatorial Guinea, Guinea- Bissau, Macau (China), Mozambique, Portugal, Sao Tome and Principe, Sri Lanka and the host nation Goa (India).
