BELLARY: Five officials of the No. 3 high-level canal sub-division, including assistant executive engineer Abdul Aziz, have been transferred in the wake of sub-standard repair works on the distributory No. 14 passing through Bellary city. The transfer orders issued by S. Rajashekar, Chief Engineer, Tungabhadra Irrigation Central Zone, Munirabad, comes into immediate effect. N. Suryanarayan Reddy, Kurgodu MLA, had taken exception to the sub-standard work on the canal. A sum of Rs. 63 lakh was released to repair the 800-metre stretch of bunds on either side of the canal. The concrete of the bund had caved in and developed cracks at several places within ten days after the release of water. Mr. Reddy, who had inspected the canal a month before the release of water, brought up the issue of sub-standard works and instructed officials to lay emphasis on quality. Mr. Reddy was infuriated on seeing the low-quality of work, despite asking the officials to ensure quality, and staged a road roko demanding action against the officials and the contractors who had executed the works. He withdrew the dharna following promises that the Chief Engineer and the Deputy Commissioner would inspect the works and initiate action against those found guilty. Mr. Rajashekar, accompanied by Deputy Commissioner Arvind Srivastav, visited the spot on July 31 and admitted that the works were of sub-standard quality. Mr. Rajashekar had sought time from Mr. Reddy to initiate action against the officials and also against the contractors. Mr. Reddy had demanded that the officials be suspended and a criminal complaint be filed against the contractors. The executive engineer, No. 6 canal division, has informed Mr. Reddy that payment due to the contractors would be withheld till the entire lining of the bund was re-laid properly. He said a show cause notice had been issued to the agency which was entrusted with the third party inspection and action would be initiated after receiving an explanation from the agency.
