K.E. Prakash, Registrar, Visvesvaraya Technological University, is learnt to have requested the Lokayukta to inquire into the alleged financial irregularities in the university during 2001-2007.

He has emphasised on maintaining secrecy while conducting the investigation.

Report submitted

Highly-placed sources in the State government told The Hindu that the Registrar has also submitted a copy of the report of auditors to the Lokayukta to substantiate his demand.

No reply

Mr. Prakash has mentioned that the then Vice-Chancellor was yet to reply to repeated queries from the government and from the Accountant General.

The irregularities included a former finance officer depositing Rs. 1 crore in the bank account of a person in 2006.

‘Loss’

The letter said that “the VTU had suffered losses of crores of rupees and the reports in the media had brought disrepute to the State’s only technological university.”

Confirmed

When contacted, Dr. Prakash confirmed having written a letter to the Lokayukta after a high-level meeting convened by the government recently.
