DHARWAD: Speaker of the Legislative Assembly Jagadish Shettar has said that only literature can bring about social transformation.

He was speaking at the inauguration of the platinum jubilee celebrations of “Sahitya Bhandara” at the Karnataka Vidyavardhaka Sangha here on Saturday. He also released books of V.K. Gokak, Vittal Kamat and Veena Kulkarni.

“Literature provides succour to the mind. Those interested in knowing the world should develop reading habit”, he said. Mr. Shettar recalled the contributions made by “Sahitya Bhandara” to inculcate reading habit among people, and to promote writers of North Karnataka.

The books released were “Dyava Prithvi” by Dr. Gokak; “Idli, Orchid Mattu Atmabala” by Vittal Kamat; and “Uriva Tera Payana” by Veena Kulkarni.

Writer Mohan Nagammanavar spoke on the books that were released.

Mr. Puttappa said that it was wrong to conclude that television had affected reading habit among people. He said that some publishers were exploiting writers, and publishing had become commercial now.

Mr. Shettar and M.A. Subramanya, proprietor of “Sahitya Bhandara,” were felicitated on the occasion.
