GULBARGA: Members of the Gulbarga District Wine Merchants Association on Monday staged a demonstration and took out a procession here protesting against what they termed “harassment by the police and Excise Department officials under the guise of implementing the provisions of the Central Excise Act”.

The merchants, led by association president Veeraiah K. Guttedar and secretary Ramulu P. Reddy, took out a procession from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Chowk to the Deputy Commissioner’s office and submitted a memorandum to Regional Commissioner Rajneesh Goel. In the memorandum, they alleged that a joint team of police and excise officials frequently raided retail liquor outlets and bars in the district to look for illicit liquor, and this was nothing but harassment of the owners of these outlets and bars.
