BANGALORE: Purushotham, 46, a Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. linesman was killed after the moped he was riding was hit by a sports utility vehicle (SUV) near Jayanagar 24th Main junction on Wednesday. The SUV was driven by a police constable.
According to police, Nagaraj, Jayanagar Traffic Sub Inspector, was near Jayanagar 24th Cross booking cases for violation of traffic rules.
He and police constable Giriyappa stopped the SUV driven by Kiran for allegedly driving in a rash and negligent manner. Mr. Kiran received the notice issued by Nagaraj and left the place leaving the SUV at the spot. As the SUV was obstructing traffic flow, Mr. Nagaraj asked Mr. Giriyappa to drive the vehicle down to the police station. While Mr. Giriyappa was driving the SUV, he hit Purushotham, who was riding a moped. Purushotham was shifted to National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences, where he died of injuries. A case was registered against Giriyappa for offences under Section 279 (rash and negligent driving) and Section 304 A (causing death by negligence). Assistant Commissioner of Police (Traffic – South) Thufeal Ahmed will investigate the case.
