Udupi: District and Sessions Judge K.B. Changappa said on Thursday that it was essential for students to have legal knowledge.

He was speaking after inaugurating a university level legal awareness workshop organised by the National Service Scheme of the Mangalore University and MGM College, here.

Mr. Changappa said that it was not enough for students just to be literates. They should also have legal knowledge, he said.

Presiding over the inaugural function, administrative officer of the Academy of General Education H. Shantharam said it was necessary for students to know that while they enjoyed the rights as provided by law, they should also respect the rights of others. It was essential for educational institutions to impart legal knowledge to students through extracurricular activities, if it was not included in the curriculum.

Students should realise that the word of a person who followed law carried more weight in society, Dr. Shantharam said. Principal of MGM Pre-University College Anasuya Karkera said that students of 15 colleges were participating in the workshop. NSS Officer at MGM College Laxminarayana Karanth welcomed the gathering. Prashanth Desai proposed a vote of thanks.
