Its students excel in ASISC regional sports meet

Madikeri: Athletes from the Karumbaiah’s Academy for Learning and Sports (KALS), Gonicoppa, hogged the limelight at the XIII Association of Schools for the Indian School Certificate (ASISC) Regional Sports Meet held in Bangalore recently.

KALS athletes emerged as overall champions in the meet, a press release from principal of the KALS Gowramma Nanjappa said here on Thursday.

Sharan S. Doopad from class X won three gold medals in javelin, shot put and discuss throw. His achievements came as new meet record. B.T. Cariappa from class IX bagged two gold medals in the 800 m race and 1,500 m race while C.N. Nidhi from class VIII clinched a gold medal in discuss throw among girls. Sandeep Reddy and V.S. Sanchita, both class X students, rounded up the gold medal tally by winning 5 km walking race for boys and 3 km walking race for girls respectively.

Silver medal winners were Navya Shetty (discuss throw and javelin), Rohan Advani (1,500 m race), K.R. Sanjay (800 m and 1,500 m race) and Mallan Gowda (400 m race). Figuring in the bronze medal-winner list were C.N. Nidhi (200 m and100 m sprint), K.P. Thimmaiah (100 m hurdles) and Navya Shetty (shot put). Coaches Ravi Shankar and A.K. Chetan accompanied the team.

The school was set up by the former Indian sprint queen Ashwini Nachappa and her husband and administrator, Datha Karumbaiah, in 2004.
