The City Municipal Council took possession of a piece of land behind the Shivalaya in Vinobanagar here after removing the illegal and unauthorised structures that had been there for the last 30 years. Sixteen unauthorised houses and shops were cleared.

It was stated that the occupants had not vacated even after they were served notices.

The municipal council has already decided to provide alternative sites to the displaced families at Vinobanagar second phase.

However, two houses were spared of demolition as their occupants had brought a stay from the court.

The council intends to construct a vegetable market at a cost of Rs. 80 lakh on the land cleared of the encroachment.

CMC President N.J. Rajashekhar, Assistant Commissioner M.L. Vaishali and Municipal Commissioner Jayanna were present when the demolitions were carried out. —Special Correspondent
