Bangalore: Did you know that there are more than 13 million persons who suffer from total visual impairment in the country? Or that more than six lakh suffer from corneal blindness?

Anil Kumble, captain of the Indian Test cricket team, on Sunday pledged his eyes and called upon people to do likewise.

Speaking after inaugurating the Nethradhama Super-Speciality Eye Hospital at the Ravi Kirloskar Health City here, Mr. Kumble said that eye donation was a noble gesture. “By pledging one’s eyes, a person can be sure that two persons will be able to ‘see’ the world. No other gesture is nobler than that,” Mr. Kumble said.

Mr. Kumble also urged the media to create more awareness among the public about the importance of eye donation.

Sri Ganesh, chairman and managing director of the hospital, said: “The total number of corneal grafting operations performed across the country is hardly one lakh. This is because of the acute shortage of donors in the country,” he said.
