The former Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy has said that the Bharatiya Janata Party Government in the State had cheated the Muslims by not fully utilising funds for the welfare of minorities.

He was speaking at the convention of minorities organised by the Minority Wing of the Hubli-Dharwad Mahanagar Zilla unit here on Sunday evening.

Mr. Kumaraswamy said: “The Government had earmarked Rs. 38 crore for minority students in schools in the State.

However, as per the records available, only Rs. 3.48 crore has been released till February 15.”

Mr. Kumaraswamy pointed out that while the Government had set aside Rs. 12 crore for the welfare of minority children, it had utilised only Rs. 1.20 crore. “This clearly shows what kind of concern the BJP has towards Muslims,” he said.

He went on to underline that when he was the Chief Minister he had allotted 5.5 acres of land for the construction of ‘Haj Bhavan' at Yelahanka in Bangalore. However, when the BJP came to power, the land allotment was withdrawn. Today, the Haj Bhavan is being constructed on land belonging to the Wakf Board. What is more intriguing, he said, was that the ownership of the property is being handed over to the minority commission instead of to the Wakf Board.

Mr. Kumaraswamy went on to criticise the Congress party alleging that it had only used Muslims as a vote bank. On the other hand, the Janata Dal(Secular) had always been strongly opposing any move detrimental to the Muslims.

He appealed to the Muslims to help the JD(S) to come to power. “If Muslims support the JD(S) it will not be difficult for the party to win 130 seats in Karnataka,” he said.

‘RSS handiwork'

General Secretary of JD(S) Basanagouda Patil Yatnal recalled the Pakistani flag-hoisting incident at Sindagi in Bijapur district and said it was the handiwork of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh to defame the Muslims. “Only JD(S) condemned the incident,” he said.

Religious head Basha Peera; the former Ministers Basavaraj Horatti, Hanumanthappa Alkod; the former MLC Ismail Kalebudde; the former Mayor Firdouz Konnur; Muslim leaders H.M. Shakil Navaz, Mujahid Contractor, Hazarat Ali Dodmani, Altaf Kittur and others participated in the convention.
