Power plants proposed near Raichur
Vedike members plan dharna
Raichur: Raichur Ulisi Andolana Vedike (Save Raichur agitation committee) has decided to stage a dharna in front of the Rangamandira here on June 17 to protest against the public hearing convened by the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) on the proposed thermal power plants at Yermarus and Yedlapur villages near Raichur.
R. Manasaiah, convener of the vedike, told presspersons here on Friday that there was no point in holding a public hearing on the proposed thermal power plants as the State Government had already taken a “unilateral” decision on establishing them.
Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa laid the foundation stone for the power plants on May 26 even before holding the public hearing. The State Government had not yet obtained clearance from the Union Government to set up the power plants, he claimed.
The public hearing had been planned to mislead people agitating against establishment of thermal power plants near Raichur, he charged.
Mr. Manasaiah said that the Government was trying to exploit people of the region as it had faced stiff opposition in other parts of the State for setting up thermal power plants.
Other conveners of the vedike S. Rajashekar and Y.K. Chandrashekarappa were present on the occasion.
