FIERY PROTESTS: Activists of the Karnataka Rakshana Vedike burning an effigy of the Shiv Sena leader Bal Thackeray in Shimoga on Friday condemning his alleged derogatory remarks against Jnan Pith Award-winner Chandrashekhar Kambar.

Activists of the Karnataka Rakshana Vedike staged a protest here on Friday condemning the derogatory remarks passed by Shiva Sena chief Bal Thackeray against Jnan Pith Award-winner Chandrashekhara Kambar.

By demanding withdrawal of Jnan Pith Award announced for Dr. Kambar, Mr. Thackeray has insinuated Kannada language and literature. Politicians like Mr. Thackeray are trying to rake up the border row between Karnataka and Maharashtra for their personal gains.

Mr. Thackeray is trying to disturb peace and amity by fanning the language sentiments, the protesters alleged.

The protesters expressed displeasure against Mayor of Belgaum Manda Balekundri and Deputy Mayor Renu Killekhar for showing disregard to Kannada. The behaviour of Maharashtra Ekikarana Samiti has posed a threat to the federal structure of the nation. The protesters sought the State Government to take action against the two and supersede the Belgaum City Corporation.
