Members of the Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha (KRRS) appealed to the district administration to initiate stringent action against those involved in illegal sand extraction in Molkalmuru taluk.

In a memorandum submitted to Deputy Commissioner V.P. Ikkeri here on Wednesday, KRRS said that several years ago the district administration had invited tenders for sand extraction. Once the legal tender-holders had completed their work, the illegal sand extraction began. Some people have, with the support of elected representatives and officers, illegally dug as far as eight feet into the riverbed, KRRS members alleged.

Officers have not taken any steps to stop this, even after repeated pleas, they claimed. They appealed to the Deputy Commissioner to initiate action before the residents of villages downstream on the river lost their patience and took the law into their hands.

The sangha warned authorities that it would stage a dharna outside the Deputy Commissioner’s office from August 1, unless the situation was corrected.
