Members of the district unit of the Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha and Hasiru Sene have decided to block traffic on the Hiriyur-Challakere road here on November 21 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. in protest against the move to supply drinking water from the Vani Vilas Sagar to the Indian Institute of Science campus at Kudapur.

In a press release issued here on Monday, the members said that various pro-Kannada, Dalit and women’s organisations, and political leaders would participate in the agitation to put pressure on the government to stop the ongoing work on laying a pipeline to the Kudapur campus of Indian Institute of Science.

The authorities concerned had not stopped the work even after repeated appeals. Therefore, it had been decided to launch an agitation under the leadership of Nanjavaduta Swami of the Gurugunda Bramheshwar Maha Samstan of Sira taluk.

“The authorities should realise that more than 150 villages in Hiriyur taluk are suffering from acute shortage of drinking water as almost all borewells in the taluk have dried up owing to scanty rainfall for two consecutive years. Under these circumstances, the decision to go ahead with the proposal to supply water to the Kudapur campus of Indian Institute of Science is wrong,” they said.

The farmers stated that the agitation would continue until the government stopped the work on laying pipeline for supply of water to the Indian Institute of Science campus.
