HASSAN: The former president of Hassan Zilla Panchayat and Congress leader H.M. Krishna Prasad died after a brief illness in Bangalore on Wednesday.

He was 61. Mr. Prasad is survived by wife Indira and a son and daughter.

His body was brought to the zilla panchayat office premises on Thursday where president of the zilla panchayat C.N. Balakrishna and other members paid their respects. The funeral was held at Bykere in Sakleshpur taluk.

Mr. Prasad was the president of the zilla panchayat from 2002 to 2004.

Several leaders have condoled his death. The former president of the Karnataka Coffee Growers’ Federation Jagannath described him as a leader par excellence who maintained secular principles throughout his life. As president of the zilla panchayat, he worked for the overall development of society, Mr. Jagannath added.

Dodde Gowda; chairman of the United Academy Education Institution C.M. Chandrasekhar, socialist leaders Manjunatha Datta and R.P. Venkatesh Murthy have condoled his death.
