HUBLI: The former Chief Ministers of Maharashtra and Karnataka respectively Vilasrao Deshmukh and S.M. Krishna, former cricketer Azaruddin, film star Suchitra Krishnamurthy and a host of political leaders, religious heads turned up to bless the 1,150 couples who entered the wedlock in a mass marriage ceremony organised by the S. Lad Educational and Charitable Trust founded by Kalaghatagi MLA Santosh Lad at Kalaghatagi in Dharwad district on Friday.

In the event which witnessed a large turnout with people from Dharwad, Gadag, Haveri, Bellary and nearby districts attending it, those who exchanged marriage vows included 40 Muslim couples. Kitchouche Sharif of Uttar Pradesh Mohammed Qasim Ashraf (Babasaheb) said there was death in conflict and the only way to ensure the development and prosperity of the country was to ensure that there was communal harmony and unity in the country.

Mr. Deshmukh and Mr. Krishna, who jointly inaugurated the mass marriage ceremony, was all praise for MLA Santosh Lad.

A 42-acre plot near Dharwad Cross of Kalaghatagi was used to host the function. Around 400 counters had been set up for food.
