Innovative farming methods on display

DHARWAD: In spite of wet conditions, the 19th Krishi Mela and National Organic Farming Exhibition organised by the University of Agricultural Sciences (UAS), Dharwad, is attracting thousands of people from across the State and from neighbouring States.

While a sudden downpour had dampened the spirits of the organisers on Tuesday, favourable climate has resulted in people flocking the university campus in large numbers to know the latest advances in the field of agriculture.

Although the UAS has said that the focus is on organic farming, it has given equal importance to natural farming and integrated farming methods.

In addition to its successful programme “Raitarinda Raitarige,” it has put on display innovative farming methods developed by farmers using the limited resources available with them.

As many as 450 stalls covering various aspects of agriculture have been erected by the university in a 10-acre land, which had been earmarked for the purpose from this year.

Star attraction

The latest farming equipment from some of the leading farm equipment manufacturers is the star attraction of the mela. There were enthusiastic enquiries for the solar energy based pesticide sprayer, low-cost tillers, harvesting equipment and some innovative tools for farm labourers.

Display of the high yield varieties and new farming methods are the other crowd pullers. The cattle show and pet animals’ show is the other attraction.

Several government agencies working in the field of agriculture, horticulture and agri-research have put up stalls. The Krishi Mela will conclude on Friday.
