Congress leaders and workers, who gathered at the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee office here, celebrated the appointment of All India Congress Committee coordination committee chairman and MP Rahul Gandhi to the newly created post of AICC vice-president at the Chintan Shivir held at Jaipur.

They burst crackers and distributed sweets to the people expressing their happiness over the anointment of Mr. Gandhi to the second-most powerful and important post in the organisation, and hailed it as an opportunity to boost the morale of the youth in the country.

Addressing the gathering, president of the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike Congress unit and MLA Dinesh Gundu Rao said the party workers, especially the youth, were of the view that Mr. Gandhi would be the leader of the future, but the AICC president Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had appointed him vice-president giving him more responsibility to steer the party to victory in the next Lok Sabha elections.

KPCC president G. Parameshwara, who attended the Chintan Shivir, in a message hailed the decision of the Congress Working Committee to bring Mr. Gandhi to the forefront of the party. It was a happy augury for the Congress as he was leading it fulfilling the desire of the party workers, he said.

Recalling the contribution made by Rajiv Gandhi, when was Prime Minister, to telecommunication and information technology, Dr. Parameshwara said that those measures were responsible for the development of the country. .

The former Chairman of the Legislative Council and MLC Veeranna Mathikatti, the former Minister and MLA K.J. George and K. Govindaraj, MLC were present.
