The Kothanur police have been accused of beating up a 35-year-old woman and her son in connection with a stolen gold chain. According to Prakash Kariyappa of the South India Cell for Human Rights Education and Monitoring, Kasturi and her 13-year-old son were taken to the Kothanur Police Station on Monday. This was after Veera, the suspect in the theft, pointed towards Kasturi and said she had received the chain stolen by him. Kasturi and the boy were badly beaten by woman constables, Mr. Kariyappa said. The police released the two in the evening after they found no evidence of involvement. A complaint is being filed before the Karnataka State Human Rights Commission. However, the police denied any harassment.

“The two were brought in for questioning. When they said they didn't have the gold chain, we released them,” the police said.
