Copies of the budget booklets burnt in protestDharna withdrawn after DC agreed to get a clarification from the Government
KOPPAL: Presentation of the annual budget of the Koppal City Municipality for 2007-08 was disrupted when a group of pro-Kannada activists staged a dharna protesting against printing of copies of the budget in English.
The budget proceeding was suspended when the activists gheraoed the officials and burnt copies of the budget booklets condemning the district administration for neglecting Kannada.
Nearly 100 activists led by Rajshekara Angadi, president of the Koppal district Kannada Sahitya Parishat and Vijayakumar Kavalur, president of the city unit of the Kannada Rakshana Samiti, assembled in front of the Sahitya Bhavan when they came to know that the officials of the Koppal City Municipality were preparing to present the annual budget with English booklets.
They demanded the officials not to proceed with the budget presentation till they replaced the budget copies in Kannada. They were told that the budget was being presented with its copies prepared in English as per the directives from the authorities of the municipal administration.
However, the activists made a forced entry into the Sahitya Bhavan when the officials were preparing to proceed with the presentation of the budget without heeding to their demand.
The situation forced the officials to suspend the proceedings.
The activists, who came out of the Sahitya Bhavan, staged a dharna at Ashoka Circle disrupting traffic. They decided to continue their dharna till they get a clarification from the Deputy Commissioner on his stand for presenting the budget copies in English. Deputy Commissioner Naveenra Singh, who is also the administrator of the Koppal City Municipality, and P.S. Annigeri, City Municipal Commissioner, appealed to the agitators to withdraw their dharna and allow the budget presentation as the budget proceedings were being done as per the directions of the municipal administration.
However, the agitators withdrew their dharna after the Deputy Commissioner agreed to proceed with the presentation of the budget only after getting a clarification from the Government.
