Only U.B. Banakar wins in Hirekerur
The Karnataka Janata Paksha faced a humiliating defeat in Haveri district, where it was launched, with just one of its leaders winning the polls. All the BJP MLAs in Haveri district, except for Minister Basavaraj Bommai, had chosen to join the former Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa after he launched the KJP.
While the former Minister C.M. Udasi and the former MLAs Nehru Olekar and G. Shivanna contested on the KJP ticket, the former MLA Sureshgouda Patil from Byadgi Assembly constituency allowed the former MLC Shivaraj Sajjanar to contest as the KJP candidate from his constituency. However, all of them were defeated by Congress candidates.
The victory of KJP candidate U.B. Banakar in Hirekerur Assembly constituency is the only relief for the party.
The former Deputy Speaker Manohar Tahsildar of the Congress defeated C.M. Udasi in Hangal Assembly constituency by a margin of 5,686 votes. While Mr. Tahsildar polled 66,324 votes, Mr. Udasi got 60,638 votes. BJP’s Basavaraj Hadimani could secure only 7,052 votes.
In Haveri (SC) Assembly constituency, Rudrappa Lamani of the Congress defeated Mr. Olekar by a margin of 30,208 votes. As against 83,119 votes secured by Mr. Lamani, Mr. Olekar got 52,911 votes.
In Ranebennur Assembly segment, G. Shivanna had to be satisfied with the third position. The former Minister K.B. Koliwad of the Congress defeated Independent candidate R. Shankar by a margin of 6,788 votes. While Mr. Koliwad secured 53,780 votes, Mr. Shankar got 46,992 votes.
In Byadgi Assembly constituency, the former Minister Basavaraj Shivannanavar of the Congress defeated Shivaraj Sajjanar by a margin of 13,359 votes. Against 57,707 votes secured by Mr. Shivannanavar, Mr. Sajjanar got 44,348 votes.

Despite facing the wrath of his one-time mentor Mr. Yeddyurappa, Mr. Bommai managed to win in Shiggaon Assembly constituency against Sayed Azimpeer Khadri of the Congress by a margin of 9,503 votes. As against 73,007 votes polled by Mr. Bommai, Mr. Khadri got 63,504 votes and KJP’s Bapugoudra K. Patil finished third with 7,810 votes.
