He requests Shivashankarappa to choose any other constituency
Syed Saifullah, secretary of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee, has appealed to Shamanur Shivashankarappa, Davangere MLA, to contest the next Assembly elections from anywhere in the district, leaving the south Assembly seat to minorities.
Reminding Mr. Shivashankarappa that during the last Assembly elections, he had promised, in the presence of many senior party leaders, including the former Railway Minister C.K.A Jaffer Sharief, that he would not contest the next elections from Davangere south while seeking the support of minority community, Mr Saifullah requested the former to allow a minority leader to contest from that constituency this time.
Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, Mr. Saifullah said that more than 45 per cent of voters in Davangere south were from the minority community as per the recent Census.
It may be recalled here that Mr. Saifullah had been given the Congress ticket to contest from Davangere north in the last elections.
However, supporters of the former Minister S.S. Mallikarjun had forced Mr. Saifullah to give it up in favour of Mr. Mallikarjun.
However, Mr. Mallikarjun’s nomination was rejected then as more than one name had been mentioned in the B form and the Congress lost the seat without a contest.
