‘Commend Rai for Padma Shri Award’

MANGALORE: The 95th birth anniversary of Poet Kayyara Kinhanna Rai, who presided over the 67th Akhila Bharatha Kannada Sahitya Sammelana held in Mangalore in 1998, will be observed on June 8 at Badiyadka in Kasargod, about 50 km from here. Kasaragod, which has thick population of Kannadigas, is in Kerala.

Mr. Rai, who was born in the year 1915, took part in the freedom struggle other than being a poet. His famous works of poetry are Shreemukha, Punarnava, Chethana, and Samagaana. Anna Devaru Mattu Itara Kathegalu is his famous collection of short stories. Panchami is his translation of the Upanishads. His autobiography is Duditave Nanna Devaru.

He served as a journalist in Mangalore and later as a teacher and won the national award for teachers in 1970. He has been fighting for the cause of Kannada in Kasaragod ever since Kerala was formed. He has been active in the movement demanding the region’s transfer to Karnataka.

The Kayyara Kinhanna Rai 95 Abhinandana Samithi announced in a press release that the celebration will begin at 2 p.m. with the singing of the poems written by Mr. Rai by the team led by Rathnakar S. Odangallu.

Scholar Erya Lakshminarayana Alva will deliver the felicitation address in the official celebration programme to be presided by the president of Karnataka State Border Area Development Authority, Chandrakath Bellad.

The felicitation volume ‘Nadoja Dr. Kayyaraa-95’ will be released during the occasion and a documentary directed by Vamana Nandavara on the life and works of Mr. Rai will be screened.

The samiti has urged the State Government to suggest the name of the poet for Padma Shri award and to establish Kayyara Kinhanna Rai Chair in Mangalore and Kannada Universities. The samiti has urged the Government to release grants for making the house of Mr. Rai a Kavitha Kuteera at Badiyadka as a research centre for the study of literature and also to digitize the complete works of Mr. Rai. An award in the name of Mr. Rai has to be established, said he samiti.
